As Patriarch, it's with mixed emotions that I declare our Leather Family exactly 10 years old. We officially formed at the Black Rose gathering in Washington, DC back in 1999 and here we are, leaving for Black Rose 2009 tomorrow.
I say mixed emotions because it's hard to believe that 10 years have gone by this fast.
It's been a Heck of a journey. We've made some truly wonderful friends and had more amazing experiences then anyone has a right to expect in one lifetime, let alone 10 years. Our family has grown, from the original 5 of us in 1999 to 14 in 2009. That averages out to about 1 person a year and that feels just about right. All leather families are different but in ours we like to bring people in slowly and then commit to each other for good. We have a joke in our family that "NO ONE EVER LEAVES THE FAMILY..." They just move further down the page on the website, lol! But the majority of us still see each other often, and the few who don't are missed greatly.
All in all, I couldn't be happier and more proud of our little bunch, and all that we've accomplished over these 10 years.
One of our main goals, when we set out, was to make sure we passed on the things we were taught and learned, to others in the scene. Our whole family is very involved in education and you can find one of us teaching at most events across this Kinky Country. Our work as a family at Camp Crucible each year has also been very rewarding, giving many of us a chance to be together and do that voodoo that we do ;)
On a personal note, after finishing my 6th and final year as a member of the TES Board of Directors and moving on to the dreaded "Emeritus Board Member" status, I realize that with all the politics and stress I've been through in the name of serving our community, The single most important thing I've done, has been teaching the Novice group at TES for the last 7 years with my girl Lady D. When I see the hundreds of people who have come through the group over the years; many now board-members of their own and leaders in our community, and know we had a small part in putting them on the right road... Well... that would make my mentors proud and that gives me a lot of satisfaction.
I am a very, VERY lucky man. I have an amazing wife Skye, who is my rock. Two wonderful little girls in Lady D & Anna, some of the best friends a person could ask for and a leather family that makes me proud on a daily basis.
So, even if I am a Grumpy Fuck, I love you all and am blessed to have you all in my life.
All in all, it's been one hell of a ride... Here's to another great 10 years of Sovereign House. Check back with me in 2019 for an update!
